Reporting Analyst

Benefits Reporting Analyst

Salary: Competitive Salary + Performance Bonus
Location: 100% Remote
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Is This Role For You?

This is a healthcare analytics and consulting support role — not a software engineering or programming position. The right candidate works primarily in Excel, thinks in terms of claims trends and cost drivers, and is comfortable supporting an actuary with underwriting and financial analysis.

If your background is primarily in software development, data engineering, or building data pipelines, this role is likely not the right fit. We are looking for an analyst who is fluent in healthcare data — not one who needs to be.

About BenefitsDNA®

BenefitsDNA is a mission-driven health and welfare consulting firm focused on helping employers take control of their healthcare spend. We bring transparency, accountability, and data-driven strategy to a system that often lacks all three.

We take the work seriously. We don’t take ourselves too seriously.

We move fast, solve real problems, and rely on clean, accurate data to back everything we do.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Benefits Reporting Analyst to support our consulting actuary and internal team by organizing data, standardizing reporting, and turning complex healthcare datasets into clear, actionable insights.

This is not a passive reporting role. This is an ownership role.

You are responsible for ensuring the data is accurate, consistent, and usable — and that the insights derived from it actually help drive decisions. Day-to-day work lives in Excel, carrier reporting platforms, and Microsoft Office. Coding is not required or expected.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the consulting actuary with data preparation, analysis, and underwriting support
  • Clean, organize, and validate healthcare datasets (claims, eligibility, Rx, stop-loss, etc.) using Excel
  • Perform experience monitoring, high-cost claimant analysis, and cost trend identification
  • Build and maintain standardized reporting templates across clients
  • Support budgeting, financial forecasting, and renewal analysis
  • Identify cost containment opportunities based on claims and utilization data
  • Develop client-ready reports and presentations using Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Ensure consistency and accuracy across all reporting outputs
  • Proactively identify data issues and resolve discrepancies
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines in a client-facing environment
  • Leverage AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) to streamline data analysis, automate repetitive reporting tasks, and improve turnaround time on client deliverables
  •

What This Role is Not

We want to be direct so you can self-select accurately:

  • This is not a software engineering role — no application development or systems architecture
  • This is not a data engineering role — no building ETL pipelines or data warehouses
  • This is not primarily a coding role — Python, R, and SQL are nice-to-haves, not the job
  • This is not an IT or BI developer role — no dashboard build-outs in Tableau or Power BI as a core function

The primary tools are Excel and Microsoft Office. If that sounds limiting to you, this role is probably not the right fit.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance, Health Administration, or a related quantitative field
  • 1–2 years of experience in healthcare analytics, employee benefits, insurance, underwriting, or consulting
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel (formulas, pivot tables, VBA a plus) — this is your primary tool
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly PowerPoint and Word, for client-ready deliverables
  • Familiarity with healthcare carrier reporting, claims data, and benefits plan structures
  • Strong analytical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to translate complex data into clear insights for non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfort using or willingness to adopt AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) to enhance productivity, improve reporting efficiency, and reduce manual work

Core Competencies

  • Ownership: you ensure the data is right and the story makes sense
  • Analytical Thinking: you connect the dots, not just report numbers
  • Attention to Detail: you catch what others miss
  • Organization: you manage multiple datasets and deadlines without losing control
  • Communication: you make complex data understandable

Nice to Have

  • Experience with self-funded health plans, stop-loss coverage, or carrier reporting portals
  • Basic understanding of actuarial concepts (risk, trend, PMPM, utilization)
  • Exposure to pharmacy (Rx) claims data or high-cost claimant programs
  • Experience with SQL for supplemental data extraction
  • Familiarity with Python or R (supplemental to Excel, not a replacement)

What Success Looks Like

  • Data is clean, consistent, and reliable across all client reporting
  • Reports are standardized, accurate, and easy to interpret
  • Insights are clear and actionable — not confusing or incomplete
  • The consulting actuary and internal team can rely on your work without second-guessing
  • Clients receive reporting that drives real decisions about their healthcare spend

Why This Role Matters

This role is the backbone of our analytics. If the data is wrong or inconsistent, everything downstream breaks. You will play a direct role in supporting actuarial analysis, improving reporting standards, and helping us deliver better outcomes for our clients.

You’ll gain hands-on exposure to real-world healthcare claims data and build a strong foundation for growth in analytics, actuarial work, or consulting.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonus
  • 401(k) + match
  • Full benefits package
  • 100% remote work environment
  • A team that works hard, supports each other, and actually enjoys what they do
  • Direct exposure to leadership and strategic initiatives
  • A chance to be part of a company actively challenging the status quo in healthcare
